Conceived during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and completed in 2022, Gathering is a visual meditation on human intersectionality and the restoration of communal life. The piece was born from a time when the title itself—a "gathering"—was a prohibited human activity, making this imagined scene both a rebellion and a dream.
Set within a cafe that bridges contemporary style with traditional Vietnamese motifs, the painting features a cast of "look-alike" figures. This visual repetition challenges the illusion of individuality, suggesting that beneath our unique surfaces, we are fundamentally the same and inextricably linked. The shared color patches across their bodies serve as a silent reminder of our collective vulnerability—a hint that we are all "infected" not just by a virus, but by a shared history. As each figure reacts differently to their surroundings, the painting captures the spectrum of human attitude, from anxiety to hope, rendered in a vibrant palette that celebrates the arrival of the "new normal."
